Neo-Pagan Sumble

Many modern Asatru groups define Sumble as a drinking ritual. This is correct. The Asatru Community, Inc. states the following: “There are three main rounds to the sumbel. The first round is to the gods and goddesses. The second round is for ancestors and heroes. Finally, the third round is for boasts and oaths.”

The Asatru Community does not give a quote of the Eddas or a Saga to back up this claim. The Asatru Community, Inc. on this same link states: “A sumbel is started by the person who is hosting the rite. A drinking horn is filled with libation for the ceremony. The host makes his toast and then passes to the next person. The horn is passed to each individual in turn.” The word “to” in blue is not on the website, a typo.

Therefore, TAC (The Asatru Community, Inc) states that Sumble has three rounds, and that there is one central drinking horn that gets past.
